The Roger Cruickshank Scholarship

The Vittoria & District Foundation Scholarship was initiated by the Heritage Committee of The Foundation, to recognize scholastic and extra-curricular achievement and to provide financial assistance to young people of Vittoria and the surrounding district, entering their first year of post-secondary education. The intent of the Scholarship hasn’t changed in 25 years, some things have. The scholarship was renamed The Roger Cruickshank Scholarship, in honour of Vittoria’s Godfather. Past committee members have included Dr. Raymond Danley, Marian Bezzo and the late Jim Wies.

PURPOSE:

The programme is intended to recognize scholastic achievement and provide financial assistance to students of Vittoria and district entering their first year of post-secondary education.

VALUE:

A $2,500.00 scholarship will be awarded for entrance to university or community college.

ELIGIBILITY:

Eligibility is limited to residents of Vittoria and district. (For purposes of this 2025 scholarship, "district” has beenbounded by Hwy 59 on the west, on the south by Lake Erie, on the east by Port Ryerse Road, and on the north the Sixth Concession of Charlotteville).

People who have already completed some post-secondary studies are not eligible.

QUALIFICATIONS OF APPLICANT:

Candidates must have completed the last year of schooling required for admission to university, community college,or apprenticeship program in not more than two years. There will be TWO scholarships awarded in 2025.

OBLIGATION OF WINNER:

The successful candidate must be prepared to enter a full-time course of study at a university, minimum of a two-yearfull- time program at a community college, or full-time in an apprenticeship program, within one academic year ofgraduation from secondary school. The successful candidates will attend the annual auction as a guest and give abrief speech about how the money was utilized and what they are enrolled in.

(Eligibility will not be affected if the applicant takes no more than one academic year off or takes additional coursesafter graduation before continuing their post-secondary education).

AWARDING OF SCHOLARSHIP:

The awarding of the scholarship will be based on the following principles:

1) The academic record and all-around achievement of the student, attested to by the school principal. Candidates must have an average of 75% or better in their six highest final grade academic courses (please attach original Ministry of Education final student transcripts and a letter of recommendation from the principal to application).

2) An essay accompanying this application, of approximately 1,000 words on topic below (essays to be typed, doublespaced on 8 1/2" x 11" paper)

Essay Topic ⟶ Relate a component in your life (individual, hobby, personal experience), which has influenced your decisions and choice of future goals.

3) Proof of acceptance at a post-secondary institution, or apprenticeship program.

Each finalist must attend a personal interview with the Roger Cruickshank Scholarship Selection Committee of The Vittoria & District Foundation Inc. The interview is considered in the evaluation process for the scholarship. All essays become the property of The Vittoria & District Foundation Inc.

METHOD OF PAYMENT:

Payment will be made by The Vittoria and District Foundation Inc. to the the applicant to whom the scholarship is awarded following the decision of the Committee.

DEADLINE DATE: JULY 11, 2025

Completed applications, letter of recommendation, original Ministry of Education final Ontario Student Transcriptsand confirmation of acceptance at university, community college, or apprenticeship program are to be sent by POST directly to The Vittoria & District Foundation Inc. and must arrive at the address given below no later than July 11, 2025. Applicants will receive communication acknowledging receipt of their application.
